Established in 1995, Open Spaces is now a medium-sized multi-disciplinary practice, specialising in all aspects of landscape, arboricultural and ecological consultancy. You can be confident that we will provide you with a fully integrated service covering all aspects of landscape design and consultancy, planning, ecology and tree related matters and whether you are an Architect, developer, builder or Planning Consultant, we can offer you and your project practical, pragmatic yet innovative advice and solutions, ensuring the fastest possible progression of your project through the planning system.
We are a Registered Practice with the Landscape Institute, our ecologists are all full members of CIEEM and our tree consultants are all qualified in arboriculture.

Graeme is a Chartered Landscape Architect, a Fellow of the Arboricultural Association and a BALI Registered Designer. With a career that includes working as Tree and Landscape Officer within a local authority and as a University lecturer in Landscape Architecture, Graeme’s experience and qualifications give him a unique holistic understanding of the three main areas of our business – landscape design, trees and planning.
Karolyn is a fully qualified (BSc Hons) Landscape Designer, qualified in Arboriculture to L4, Practice Manager and Member of Society of Garden Designers. With a background in marketing and a former career in the City, Karolyn takes the lead in soft landscape design while ensuring the smooth running of our commissions and all aspects of the office administration.
Carolin has over 12 years experience in landscape design and management and garden design, having graduated in Germany with a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture & Management. She has gained professional experience working for a number of landscape architecture practices and has been recognised with a BALI award for her designs. In recent years, Carolin has added RHS horticulture qualifications to her portfolio.
Tamae graduated from the Higher Certificate in Garden Design and MA in Garden Design at Writtle College with multiple awards. With an extensive experience in working at a large NHS hospital to create the healing outdoor spaces, she specialises in therapeutic landscape design by utilising both Japanese and English landscape philosophy and principles. She is also managing the practice’s CAD and BIM process to maintain BIM Level 2 compliance, and pushing Open Spaces to be at the forefront of BIM. Tamae is a Licentiate Member of Landscape Institute and a member of the Landscape Institute BIM Working Group.
Sara studied for her Bachelor of Science degree at UTAD which is one of the most prestigious universities in Portugal. It is there that she found her passion for ecology and nature. She went on to complete the Post-graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture at Birmingham City University where she focussed on Landscape and Urban Planning. Prior to working at Open Spaces, Sara has worked as a Landscape Assistant in Portugal where she gained invaluable experience of sustainable urban design and conservation. Sara joined Open Spaces as an Assistant Landscape Architect and is working on numerous projects as well as mastering BIM supported software.
Sophie recently graduated from the ESALA programme at Edinburgh College of Art with an MSc in Landscape Architecture. Five years of study resulted in Sophie’s master’s dissertation focusing on the evolution of play and playground design, which was reflected in her final year projects and in her current thinking. After graduating Sophie followed a passion for plants and worked as a gardener in the historic gardens surrounding William Robinson’s Gravetye Manor before beginning her professional design career here at Open Spaces.
Pete has been an ecologist for over 10 years and worked in ecological consultancy for over 15 years. Experienced in all aspects of protected species surveys and mitigation design, Pete has been involved in a wide variety of projects ranging from single developments to strategic urban renewal schemes subject to full EIAs. Ever pragmatic, Pete is a full member of CIEEM.
Dan is an ecological Consultant with over 14 years experience in a wide range of surveys and ecological work, including Preliminary Ecological Assessments, nesting, wintering and breeding birds, bats, badgers, dormice, great crested newts, reptiles and water voles. Dan has experience in mitigation design and managed many reptile and great crested newt translocations. Dan has a First Class Honours degree in Applied Ecology from University of East London and is a full member of CIEEM.
